Lost Wax Casting

The process of making a metal object using the lost wax casting technique is truly one of the best outlets for creative expression in metalworking. The process involves carving or sculpting an object in wax in the precise size and shape desired. One must also take into account the finish of the object at this point and make the object as close to the desired finished metal object as possible. The wax piece is then set into as mold which is filled with a plaster-like substance. This mold is then heated in a kiln until the wax is “burned-out” (completely volatilized). The “lost wax” leaves a hollow in the mold which is the same shape as the wax object that was there. This hollow is then filled with molten metal, the metal is allowed to solidify and the mold is removed by plunging in water where it disintegrates leaving behind the metal piece. This piece must then be cleaned up and finished, polished, textured, drilled, set with stones etc. The resulting piece is one of a kind.
